Viewers of "Living While American" will see how cities are making law enforcement more equitable--and more effective.

In the U.S., people of color are stopped by police about twice as often as white people. They're also about twice as likely to be searched if they're stopped--but less likely to have illegal drugs or guns than white people. Research across the country confirms these stark facts over and over again. But some communities are changing the equations:
  • In 2022, the Philadelphia police agreed not to stop drivers for minor infractions, such as expired inspection stickers, that do not threaten public safety.

  • In Denver, Rochester, NY, St. Petersburg and other cities teams of mental health workers, instead of armed police officers, now respond to 911 calls related to mental health crises.

  • Prosecutors in Minnesota and other states are no longer prosecuting cases against people who are profiled and detained in traffic stops.
These and other changes may not reduce a police officer's biases, but they do reduce people's experience of racism in daily life. That's progress. It's worth celebrating. And it can spread across the country if we demand it.
